Use Collection Management Policies to Curate Your Collectibles
Whether you have an official collection or just a bunch of stuff, it can all overwhelm you. Even if you don’t have museum quality items, setting some rules can keep it all in check.
Unclutterer explains why you can get rid of some things by using the curation method:
Museums sometimes remove items if they are duplicated with others in the collection or if they are “of inferior quality than other items of the same type in the collection.” They can also remove items that are “too difficult or impossible to properly care for or store”. Items can also be damaged to the point that they no longer fit within the collection, and these items will be removed.
This approach probably won’t work with a pile of rubbish. This tip is more suitable for memorabilia from high school, college, and other life events. Do you really need all these T-shirts? Would one quality T-shirt fit in the museum for you? Check out other lessons to be learned from the museum’s work.
