Soup Ingredients to Save for the Last Minute

Soup is one of those simple and all kinds of recipes . You add a bunch of something, pour in some liquid, and it’s a delicious treat. However, some products are best left to the very end to get the right taste and presentation.

Most soups can be prepared ahead of time and even frozen for a snack. Kitchn explains that you cannot add some ingredients in advance:

  1. Side dishes such as herbs or green onions: may wilt and lose their crisp (exception: rosemary, thyme)
  2. Cheese: May stratify into an oily gruel (exception: Parmesan zest)
  3. Seafood and Eggs: Cooks quickly and can become plump
  4. Hot sauce and citrus juices: lose their potency (exception: add early to tone up the flavor)

If your recipe uses these ingredients, feel free to prepare for this moment in advance. If I freeze the soup, I simply mark where I left off in the recipe on the bag. If you’re working on the recipe you found, these instructions are likely already there, but it’s good to know if you’re working on the fly. Check out the full list here.
