The Correct Way to Pour Half of the Beer

If you are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today, surprise your friends by pouring half of it correctly – without a special spoon . Served properly, this beer drink has a spectacular two-tone appearance, but if you don’t pour it with the proper care, you’ll end up with a regular pint of beer, which is far less impressive.

Half-and-Half (also sometimes called Black & Tan, as our commentators have pointed out is a controversial name that is best avoided ) is a mixture of two different beers. When creating layered drinks, the key is to identify the liquid with the highest specific gravity and start the drink with that ingredient. In this case, it’s a pale ale (we like to use Bass). Pour each next ingredient in descending order.

Here are some more suggestions:

  • Quickly pour the first beer – ale; this creates a lot of foam that helps maintain the layering.
  • Bend the handle of a wide, round spoon (such as a soup spoon) so that it sits on the edge of the glass to make it easier to pour your second beer, Guinness. This is optional, but it helps!
  • Very, very slowly and carefully, pour the second beer over the center of the spoon.
  • Wait until you’re ready to pour your drink before opening Guinness. One that has been sitting for too long will be even more difficult to pour.

Finally, don’t let the drink sit around for too long, as the beers will start to blend over time. But there should be no problem behind this pointer.
