Change Your Problems As a Game to Solve Them More Effectively
Most of us react to our problems with stress. Something is not going as we expect, so we are worried. However, as the former SEAL suggests, treating your problems like a game can help change your attitude.
Paradoxically, we enjoy problems when they are playful. Whether it’s competing against others in a multiplayer game or solving puzzles on our own , we think problem solving is fun. However, competing with someone else at work or balancing our budget is stressful. They are essentially the same process. Former SEAL platoon commander James Waters suggests treating them like this:
Many people do not realize that what they are doing at BUD / S is assessing your ability to cope with difficult circumstances and keep working. It’s a game. If you want to become a fur seal, you need to play this game. You should enjoy it and keep an eye on the big picture.
There is, of course, a reason why we are more concerned about real competition than fake competition. However, even if your real problems matter, treating them like a game can be a clear asset that will help you win. You’re more likely to come up with better solutions if you don’t push yourself more than you need to.
