Overcome Phone Shyness by Scripting

Are you intimidated by the prospect of calling someone? Are you putting off phone calls for as long as you can? Whether you’re feeling nervous about talking on the phone or just a little shy, The Art of Manliness suggests creating a script before calling to help calm you down.

It may be because we rarely make phone calls these days, but it seems like a lot of people are really afraid of talking on the phone. If that sounds like you, The Art of Manliness suggests writing a simple script to get you started:

Write your “opening remarks” word for word, as this can be the most difficult part of the conversation; once you exceed this threshold, you will often feel less nervous. In your opening, you want to convey who you are, where you are calling from and / or what you are calling about …

After you write your opening remarks, make a list of the key points that you would like to bring up during the conversation. Try to anticipate what the other person might ask you and what you would like to say in response. Mark the numbers and names you may be asked to provide.

How much or how little you write is really up to you, but it seems like enough to get most people getting started. Check out The Art of Manliness for some more tips.
