Avoid Over-Matching Clothes With the Connect Two Rule
Creating a simple, minimalist wardrobe is a great way to get rid of decision fatigue. But if you’re not quite fashion-savvy, it’s easy to overdo it with the right items. The “Connect two” rule makes things a little easier.
Refinery29 Style Director Connie Wang offers an easy way to create your outfit: pick a pair of figurines for yourself. She explains her concept:
We call this “Connecting the Two” when you go together with only two items in your clothes. You can pair a shirt and a jacket, pants and shoes, a skirt and a shirt, or any other creative combination. Leave everything else in the extra family of colors (neutrals also count) and you have a really fun outfit … “
In the photo above, it is obvious that this is a dress and tights. Everything else she wears complements each other, but these navy blue pieces make up the base.
Obviously, just picking two random pieces of the same color isn’t necessarily a great outfit. And a lot of great outfits don’t go well at all. But I like this option because it offers an easy way to get started . It’s just a simple rule of thumb that can give good results. It also looks like you tried, but not like you tried too hard, which is often the case when you get too close to things.
