Use These Apps to Find the Cheapest Gas Stations Near You
It sounds like a ragged headline from an 80s cyberpunk novel, but the US is experiencing a sudden gas shortage after the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack has led many Americans to panic purchases (and in many cases panic over purchases).
The shortage has driven up gas prices and left parts of the east coast with minimal fuel supplies. For those who have trouble filling their tank, here are a few apps that will show you where nearby gas stations are and which ones actually have gas for sale.
GasBuddy ( Android , iOS )
GasBuddy has seen a surge in downloads for iOS and Android due to gas shortages. The free app shows all nearby gas stations and allows you to search by company, and also includes a real-time price map and outage tracker. These features will help you see which points still have fuel without having to call ahead or drive around town looking for the most affordable option.
In addition to finding and tracking shipments, GasBuddy also helps you find fuel-efficient routes, track your trips, and you can even pay for gas in the app (at participating gas stations). While these features are unique to a smartphone app , you can search for the cheapest gas by state on the GasBuddy website . There is also a fuel demand tracker that predicts supply and price estimates.
Google Maps ( Android , iOS, computer )
Google Maps is another option that most people are already using on their smartphones. The web version is also easily accessible from any browser.
Open Google Maps and enter Gas Station in the search bar, or select View Nearby Places> More> Gas Stations. Some gas stations will show you the current prices. Use the filters at the top of the search results to show only stations that are currently open or those that are open 24/7. If you have an EV, Google Maps also shows you nearby EV charging locations.
Google Maps also allows users to submit reviews and other current information to businesses that can help identify gas stations with current inventory. However, Google Maps does not have specific options to mark a gas station as empty, so you will need to check for the latest comments and reviews.
