Create a New Indispensable Sandwich Seasoning With Just Two Items in the Pantry
Q: What seasoning adds spice to any sandwich that only takes 10 minutes to make and which needs the ingredients you already have in your pantry? The answer is one you’ve probably never heard of: mustard sauce!
Created by CHOW’s Chris Rochelle, this sandwich namaz requires mixing equal parts mustard powder and Worcestershire sauce. He recommends letting the mixture sit for about 10 minutes before using it to add punch to a corned beef sandwich.
Inspired by the possibilities, we gave the mustard plaster a test drive during today’s lunch: a hamburger. It had a salt-rich umami and cleared nose, and would suit any application where horseradish complements a dish: pastrami, a three-tipped sandwich, even grilled portobello or braised pork. And if you have a few extra seconds, sift through the mustard powder to keep it from sticking to Worcestershire – after about 11 minutes, you’ll still have a winning seasoning.
