Make Your Home Safer by “closing the Joint”

Home security is important not only to protect your belongings, but your family as well. You can tell pretty easily if your home is safe by checking it yourself.

If you can find weaknesses in the security system of your home, an experienced thief will definitely be able to do it. This is why Brett and Keith McKay of The Art of Manliness recommend that you ” put on a joint” or figure out how you would break into your own home:

  • Are there places around my house that could provide cover for a bad guy to break in unnoticed?
  • Is my house well lit at night?
  • Do I have unlocked doors or windows?
  • Can I easily see the valuables in my house from the street?
  • Do people in my house have a routine that would allow a burglar to determine when is the best time to hit me in the house?

Be honest and try to think like a cracker. How would you break into your house? As McKay points out, the keys to good stealing are time, noise, and visibility, so keep these elements in mind when working with your joint. Imagine planning a break day and night to make sure you have what you need. Have some fun and fix any discovered weaknesses as soon as possible.
