Remove Fresh Red Wine Stains With High Strength Clear Liquor
Red wine is a great addition to any dinner, but accidents can happen. You can get rid of fresh red wine stains from fabric and carpet by using some of the harder wine relatives to help absorb color.
The second tip in this video from YouTube’s Reactions explains the chemical makeup of red wine stains and how hard liquor can help you remove them. As with most stains, the key to removing red wine stains is quick action because you don’t want anything to settle on the fibers. Take a bottle of any clear liquor, such as vodka, gin, or white rum, and pour it over the stain, trying to absorb as much as possible with a rag. The pigments that make red wine red, such as anthocyanins, are alcohol soluble, so the strong solution keeps them dissolved and easily absorbed from the fibers. When most of the color has disappeared, apply a little water or try a homemade cleaning solution if the stain is stubborn.
