Reconstitute Stale Bread With Running Water and Quick Bake

There are many ways to restore a loaf of stale bread, from grated ice cubes to wrapping with aluminum foil . But here’s one of the easiest ways: rinse it under running water before tossing it into the oven.

This bread renaissance was made possible by the editors of BuzzFeed Life, who borrowed the idea from another editor, Rochelle Bilou, at Bon Appétit .

Keep the bread under water … the water can be hot or cold. Try tilting the loaf so that the crust is at the tap, but it’s okay if the insides get wet. Place in the oven. Either use the oven setting “warm” or set it to 300–325 degrees. Six or seven minutes should help, unless the whole loaf gets wet. Then increase the number from 10 to 12. The water turns into steam, which moisturizes the middle. Meanwhile, the crust hardens from the heat.

We like this idea because many ideas only work in moderation. If you revive it in the microwave, the bread will become too soft; If you drop a celery stalk into a bread bag, it can smell a strong celery smell. Not everyone has ice or foil. But you can’t go wrong with plain, plain old water.
