Politely Decline the Conversation by Declining the Invitation
If you find yourself in the middle of a conversation that has become awkward, frustrating, or they just won’t stop talking , you need to run. Asking them to apologize will give you the opportunity to walk away without being rude.
Sometimes you get into a completely bad conversation and need to get out without hurting your personal or professional relationship. Kim Eisenberg of Careerealism offers to apologize, but not close our eyes:
Wait for a short pause in the conversation and say something like: “Sorry, I’m going to drink / feed free shrimp at the buffet table.” I like to invite a person to come with me for food or drinks. More often than not, when we cross a room or land at a new station, each of us strikes up a conversation with other people, and our conversation ends naturally.
Using a strategy like this, you can walk away and slowly but surely get out of their hands. Your escape will seem natural, not that you are trying to escape from them as quickly as possible. Just try to gradually distract them by talking to others and paying attention to other things, otherwise you will end up with a constant friend.
