If you have student loans that are past due, the Department of Education may require a tax refund to pay off. Before planning your tax refund , make sure you actually receive it.

The government can do this through the Treasury Netting Program , which allows certain state and federal creditors to receive tax refunds directly before they reach you. The same can happen if you have overdue child support, unpaid taxes, and unemployment benefits that you owe to the state.
