Organize a One Day Tour to Kickstart the Project
From the outset, it may seem impossible to get the group to move on with the project. Email, meetings and business work get in the way. To speed up your work, get your employees together for a one-day trip.
According to Medium’s blog on the minimalist publishing platform, the fly-by-night is about bringing everyone working on a project in the same room throughout the day, solving problems together and developing a plan for future work. Under normal circumstances, work that could be done in one day can take weeks due to conflicting schedules. By bringing everyone together in one room – not just for conversations, but for actually getting the job done – you can give a boost to a project:
For example: “Should we do a one-day trip this Thursday?”
When can you say this? Maybe:
When you have been thinking about an idea for a while, you have discussed several different directions, but are not yet sure which one is better.
When you have a project that has been in progress for a while and you just want to release it (and it’s quite possible to do this in a day).
When you have a crazy guess, you can’t get it out of your head.
It might make sense to hire a fly-by-night at the beginning and end of large projects.
A less tangible benefit here is that doing group work can motivate everyone. While this type of customization won’t work all the time, doing team work can increase the team’s energy and enthusiasm for the project. Then, when the day is over, each team member goes back to their daily routine with a solid plan for where to go next.
