Go Barefoot to the Gym to Get More Out of These Exercises

Running isn’t the only exercise that can be done barefoot. Try these other barefoot exercises to improve your balance and get stronger.

Without shoes, you work your leg muscles and can potentially use more natural patterns of movement, although runners are warned to proceed with caution to avoid injury from too much barefoot work at the same time . When it comes to gymnastics, starting small is probably a good idea too.

We also don’t want you to break the gym rules, so either do it at home or make sure your bare feet are okay in your gym. Men’s Health suggests doing these movements without shoes:

  • Push-ups to further stretch your toes and feet. (If you like this stretch, try yoga toe pose as well.)
  • Deadlift to bring you closer to the ground. If you’re doing a lot of deadlifts, you may already have low-soled shoes, but if not, simply dropping your sneakers is an easy way to achieve the same.
  • Lunges so you can stabilize yourself with the muscles in your foot rather than relying on the shape of the shoe.
