Stop Looking Around the Room to Start a More Effective Conversation
When you are at a social event, there is a lot going on and there are many reasons to scan a room. If you want to strike up a fascinating conversation with the interlocutor, stop looking for something more interesting in this place.
Smartphones have a bad reputation for distracting us from the people we talk to, but distractions weren’t invented in 2007. Social events require little or no attention. The room is full of interesting people, food, music or other entertainment that might grab your attention, all together. If you really want to strike up a fun conversation with someone, stop looking around for something better. As Business Blog Inc explains:
At cocktail parties, many of us look over the shoulder of the person in front to see who is nearby. What I say, stop. Stop physically looking around the room or mentally looking around the room. Five minutes spent fully interacting with one person, as if he were the only one in the room at the moment, is worth ten times more than 15 minutes, giggling hesitantly at the most boring topics.
As a result of giving someone your undivided attention, communication with you becomes more enjoyable for them. It helps to leave a lasting impression. If you find that you are not really interested in the conversation, do not let it continue. Do a favor to both of you to end this. However, if there is someone you really want to chat with, be in the moment.
Do this and you will always be the most popular person in the room | Inc.
