Michael Kane’s Piece of Peace of Mind: Stop Obsessively Checking Your Account
Nobody likes to be ripped off. It’s natural to want to double and triple check your paperwork every time money changes hands. As Michael Caine suggests, sometimes you can just let go of the little things.
Speaking to Esquire magazine, the actor known for starring in all of Christopher Nolan ‘s films since Insomnia suggested that sometimes counting every penny you owe doesn’t help you live a better life. In most cases, the restaurant bill will be correct. Your utility bill may be several dollars less, but keeping track of it may not be worth your time. Just as no one on their deathbed wants them to spend more time at work, no one wants them to spend more time rechecking their accounts for minor inaccuracies:
In a restaurant, my wife always says, “You haven’t looked at the bill.” I say, “I don’t want to worry about looking at the bill and asking who had the onion rings? Or they overpaid me for the chips. “Because all these moments add up to years. And how much money would you pay for another year?
This does not mean that you should never look at documents or make sure that you do not pay more than you should. Checking your finances periodically is helpful and can help take care of you in the long run. Ultimately, however, ignoring small mistakes can bring you more happiness than a few dollars in the bank.
