Save Time and Money Knowing What a Tailor Can and Cannot
Tailors and cobblers can help you avoid buying new things every time your clothes are in trouble. However, a tailor cannot fix everything, so here are some important things they can and cannot fix.
When you have a beautiful piece of clothing – like a suit or an expensive pair of jeans – the tailors will suggest available fixes so you can keep wearing them. David Zila, author of Winning Shopping , explains exactly what a tailor can and cannot do:
- They can: lengthen the trousers by lowering the hem as far as possible; shorten the sleeves of coats, jackets and jackets; shorten the straps and lift the dress up to fit your chest and armpits.
- They cannot: reduce something by more than one size (proportions and seams will be knocked down); lengthen the jacket or remove the shoulder pads; mend the hole in the garment by stitching it up (although they may recommend a re-weaving service).
If your clothes can be fixed, you can save a lot of money because you don’t have to buy new ones. It’s good to know what the tailor can’t do so that you know what to expect and not waste time trying to fix what you can’t.
