If You Don’t Have Passion, Eliminate What You Don’t Like Instead.

A lot of career tips seem to center around your passion. It’s great if you know what your passion is, but what if not? It can help you think less about what you like and more about what you don’t like.

If you have a clear understanding of your passion in life, this may seem strange to you. But not everyone thinks they have a higher purpose. Some people may have more than one calling, but they still work hard and live happy, fulfilling lives. But most advice on choosing or changing careers usually focuses on passion . If you’ve been looking for your passion but still don’t know what it is, what else should you do? Career Development Specialist Lily Zhang suggests eliminating what you don’t like instead:

Knowing what you don’t want can be almost as helpful as knowing what you want. Maybe you’re the type of person who really can’t name what you like, but who knows when you come across something that you don’t like. Perfectly normal! Use your strengths and start figuring out what’s not right for you .

Your antipathy may be based on previous work experience or what you know about yourself. But listing the factors that you consider unacceptable in the job and then excluding jobs that include those factors can help you narrow down your options.

Some of us know exactly what our passions are, but for others the question is much more complicated. Perhaps this will happen later in life; it might not have happened at all. But I like Zhang’s advice because it enables people who don’t know what their passion is to find a job that they at least like .
