Use Last-Minute Breadcrumbs Instead of Cheese

You put the finishing touches on your pasta dinner and realize that you have no cheese. Don’t worry, you can add a nutty-salty accent to your dish by toasting a few bread crumbs with olive oil and salt.

The flavor will obviously not be quite the same as grated Parmesan, but you can still enjoy your meal with the salty, savory crunch that bread crumbs provide. If you’re already familiar with this substitute, Food52 suggests enhancing the flavor by adding dried herbs, anchovies, or garlic to the butter you use to toast your bread crumbs. The next time you run out of Parmesan, or just can’t afford it, try using bread crumbs instead (or make your own).
