Take the Best Pictures of Your Children by Photographing Them Every Day
Celebrity photographer Elena Shumilova believes that consistency is the most important thing when photographing children.
By taking pictures of them every day, kids feel comfortable in front of the camera and you get more authentic shots that don’t look posed. She also tells the story of almost missing her most famous photo:
… because she barely took her camera with her and was disappointed with previous failures:
Before I took this photo, my confidence was pretty low. I tried 14 more times to photograph my son and the dog – not 14 other photos, but 14 full photo sessions, all to no avail.
I was convinced that my hands were too clumsy, or my dog was not the right one for this, or my child was not the right one. That day I was just desperate and didn’t even want to take my camera with me.
But something told me to bring it. And on that fifteenth day it all came together.
This dog of ours is now famous, but he is not so photogenic from most angles. In fact, it is quite difficult to work with him. From the previous 14 photo shoots, I learned what angles and body compositions are suitable for him and my son.
It’s easy to get frustrated. It’s easy to think, “Oh, why, it won’t work anyway.” And maybe not for the first 14 times. However, these 14 photo shoots weren’t bad because I learned a lot. And they made the fifteenth possible.
While most of us won’t be able to take such great photos, this is a good reminder to never give up.
