TripMode Restricts Data Usage in OS X When You Are on a Mobile Hotspot
Mac: When you tether your Mac to your phone, you usually want to make sure you’re using as little data as possible. TripMode is an app that allows you to quickly and easily block certain apps as soon as you connect to a hotspot.
When you connect to a hotspot, TripMode automatically starts restricting internet access for any apps you open. You can customize which ones get access and which ones don’t. You can also track how much data they are using, which is handy if you have a data cap on your hotspot. For example, you can make sure CrashPlan does not sync over time when you are on a hotspot, or restrict Dropbox until you return to your regular Wi-Fi connection. You can also manually restrict apps, so this is useful if you are using public Wi-Fi or are just trying to save some battery life. There is a free seven-day trial of the app on the developer’s site if you want to try it out for a purchase.
