Avoid “keeping up With the Savings” to Improve Your Finances
We’ve all heard that we should avoid “keeping up with the Joneses,” which means spending money just because other people are buying certain things. Trying too hard to be frugal will ruin your budget anyway.
As the personal finance blog Red Debted Stepchild explains, if you spend a lot of time in money-saving circles, you’ve probably felt the pressure to win the world’s most economical game. However, it’s okay to get caught up in financial clutches from time to time. And spending hours searching for the best coupons won’t save you nearly as much as saving one invoice permanently . In short, it’s okay if you don’t win the economy game:
Rather than trying to be inconveniently frugal to keep up with the “standard” in our community, I confess to myself and to all of you that I will never be the leanest blogger you read. I’d rather find ways to make more money so I can afford my lifestyle and keep paying off my debts, instead of cutting out the things I love from my budget to save a few dollars.
The same social pressures that lead to overspending can lead to underspending, which is not always so productive. Remember, being financially responsible means spending less than you are spending . You don’t have to be a staple coupon or live without luxury to be financially responsible.
