Build Your Credibility by Avoiding the Phrase “being Honest”
Whether you’re in the midst of a debate or just trying to earn someone’s trust, adding the phrase “being honest” to your statements can undermine your trust. This is why it is best not to use it.
This may not sound like a bad thing, but it’s a familiar phrase that can gradually wash away any reliability you might be trying to demonstrate. Neil Patel of Entrepreneur explains:
When someone feels the need to declare their honesty, it slightly diminishes their personal trust. What does this statement say about you? Are you usually dishonest? Do I have to tell others that you are honest? “Honestly” is a phrase that can raise concerns about your personal authority.
People use this phrase most of the time when they are trying to emphasize the fact that they are going to be honest in their statements, but in this case, you can simply say “be straightforward.” Otherwise, “being honest” can become as bad a habit as words like “so” and “uh”.
