Eat Healthy Snacks Before Shopping to Stimulate Healthy Impulse Purchases
You already know you can’t go hungry at the grocery store, but the type of snack can make a difference. In a recent study, shoppers who sampled an apple chose 28% more fruits and vegetables than those who didn’t sample it at all.
The study, published in the journal Psychology and Marketing , involved a real apple (or cookie, for some lucky volunteers) and an imaginary shopping trip. Thus, this method has not been field tested, but it is consistent with previous research on priming : the reminder that the fruit is delicious makes you want more fruit.
And this is a simple tip: just grab an apple (or another fruit or vegetable of your choice) before you go shopping. Pair that with a drinking (water) game and see if you can find healthier foods in the store.
