Get More Time to Decide on a Job Offer by Requesting a Specific Deadline
When you are offered a new job, it may take a while for you to think before you say yes or no. By asking for a specific amount of time rather than postponing other means, you can give you the time you need, keeping the employer from losing interest.
Once you receive an extended job offer, employers usually ask you to give them an answer as soon as possible. However, moving to a new job is not the same as deciding what to eat for dinner, so it’s understandable if you need time. Asking for more time can be a little tricky, so Lynn Taylor, author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant , invites you to keep the specific request. Here’s an example:
I really appreciate this offer and am very glad to cooperate with your company. I wonder if I can get back to you before Wednesday using this opportunity.
Expressing your enthusiasm and gratitude for the offer will help keep them hooked, and setting a deadline will let them know they won’t have to wait forever. Keep in mind, however, that if you do not respond within the deadline, you risk missing work entirely. So be specific when asking, but make sure you ask the time you think you will need.
