Deep Clean Porcelain Fixtures With Baking Soda and Ammonia

If you have a porcelain bathtub or sink, you know how messy they can get over time. You can keep them looking their best with a simple mixture of baking soda and ammonia.

Cast iron fixtures usually have baked porcelain enamel. You cannot use abrasive cleaners because they can damage the finish. Apartment Therapy folks recommend washing their hands weekly with hot water and a little dish soap, but they use baking soda and ammonia for occasional deep cleaning. Just mix 1/4 cup of ammonia and 1/4 cup of baking soda into a paste. Rub the porcelain with a non-abrasive sponge and rinse well. If the parts are heavily soiled, you can also let the paste stand for a while before cleaning. After rinsing, wipe everything with a soft cloth so that the soda does not leave a film.
