Don’t Let Yourself Sleep on Your Stomach With Raw Peas
You may be comfortable, but it’s usually best not to sleep on your stomach . Luckily, you can relieve yourself of neck and back pain with a properly positioned pea.
Sleeping on your stomach can be problematic because you have to stretch your neck to breathe. This stretch stretches the vertebrae in the neck and back and can disrupt the C-bend in the neck. Business Insider’s Dina Spector spoke to Cynthia Vaughn, an Austin-based chiropractor , and she recommends this simple trick to avoid falling back on lying on your stomach:
To disrupt this sleep pattern, Vaughn advises his patients to stick raw peas on their belly before bed. When they eventually roll over onto their stomach, “the polka dots will act as an irritant and wake them up enough to find them lying on their stomach, make adjustments, and go back to sleep …”
It doesn’t have to be a pea, but it should be something round (not sharp) and about the same size. It is best to sleep on your back or side, so try to get comfortable in one of these positions. It will probably take a while to break the habit you’ve had for so long, but you’ll be grateful for doing so in the long run.
