How to Fix ITunes Library Corruption After Turning on Apple Music

Apple Music hit both iOS and desktops this week . However, there were some problems with this. Namely, users report that when they turn on iCloud Music Library, their iTunes libraries stop working. Here’s the fix.

Several users on Apple forums and on the internet reported that after enabling iCloud Music Library (which scans your music library and makes it available to stream across all your devices), their metadata stopped working. In the worst case, the album titles are not associated with the right songs, and the covers are completely wrong. Luckily, you can roll back the library file to get it working properly:

  1. Close iTunes
  2. Go to your iTunes music folder (usually username> Music> iTunes).
  3. Drag the iTunes Library.itl file from this folder to your desktop.
  4. Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
  5. Find the most recent iTunes library file [DATE] .itl. Drag it to Music> iTunes folder.
  6. Rename the iTunes Library.itl file
  7. Reopen iTunes

Your music library should now be restored. Based on the forums, the problem seems to be the most common in people who have also turned on iTunes Match in the past, but it can also occur accidentally. For now, it’s probably a good idea to stay away from enabling iCloud Music Library until the issues are fixed.
