Don’t Use Sarcasm in Conversation Until You Trust Each Other.
Sarcasm is a great way to dispel negative emotions, but it’s easy to overdo it. The Wall Street Journal suggests using sarcasm only in close relationships to avoid confusion.
It might be a little obvious that you should only use sarcasm when you are comfortable with the person, but in reality, sarcasm is best used here for personal relationships, because it is usually an expression that helps you bond with people. The Wall Street Journal explains:
So how do you deal with sarcasm? Dr. Kreutz advises remembering that if someone is being sarcastic about you, he or she may show some affection. He suggests saying something mildly sarcastic in return to show that you understand the conversation. If you are someone who likes to be sarcastic, don’t do it to strangers – they are less likely to understand your intentions … When you become an adult, [Mr. Laermer] says he uses sarcasm for several purposes: to connect with people; nudge them towards relief and not take life too seriously; and remind them of their actions. “
So think twice before throwing a sarcastic comment about your new boss, cafe clerk, or first date. It has many great uses, but save them in case the relationship gets a little more developed.
