Make Windows User Account Control Prompts Less Intrusive

Windows: The User Account Control feature in Windows provides an additional security measure by asking you to confirm before any major changes take place. It also hijacks your desktop every time you use it. This option allows you to display UAC hints in less aggressive windows.

Normal UAC prompts hide all your normal windows and darken the screen. When you click this radio button, the prompts will be displayed like any other window. To make this change, follow these steps:

  1. Open the start menu.
  2. Search for “User Accounts” to open this section of Control Panel.
  3. Click User Account Control Settings.
  4. Drag the slider from the second highest mark down to the third highest. It should now read “Only notify me when apps try to make changes to my desktop (don’t dim my desktop).”
  5. Click OK and confirm the change.

Keep in mind that this process can make your machine a little less secure. While annoying, UAC prompts are meant to make it harder for third-party applications to make changes to your computer without your knowledge. Treating requests as regular windows makes it easier for malware to bypass them. However, if the tradeoff is worth it for you, this setting can make UAC significantly less damaging.
