Make Yourself a “uniform” Job to Be More Productive
Nobody likes it when their work makes them wear uniforms. However, having some physical reminders that it’s time to get to work – be it a particular piece of clothing, a playlist for productive work, or even a dedicated desk – can help you set yourself up for work.
As the ManMade DIY tips blog points out, you don’t have to wear real uniforms to get the performance they provide. Anything related to your environment can help. It’s not about dressing you in the same clothes as everyone else and pushing creativity out of your system. This helps differentiate between play time and productivity time:
You’ve probably heard stories about authors who like to eat the same thing every day for lunch, or about artists who can paint just by listening to certain music. These “quirks” are a person’s uniform; they help them shape a working mindset. If you find yourself unable to focus on a project for as long as you want due to non-work-related distractions, try on some kind of uniform. Maybe your uniform is a favorite song, reading glasses, or your usual work pants. For me, this is my work apron, I don’t always need it, but it makes my brain work faster. Plus, my apron has no pockets for a distraction phone!
Your work form can be whatever you want, as long as it sets you up for work. For some, it might be video game music . For others, it may be as simple as putting on a tie or work shoes. Whatever you associate with getting work done, use it as your “uniform.” And most importantly, remove the uniform when you’re done. If you use the same uniform for work and play, it won’t retain its value.
