Eat Whatever You Need to Avoid Travelers’ Diarrhea

Sticking to bottled water and peeled vegetables is probably not enough to protect you from travelers’ diarrhea. The best way to keep yourself safe? Make sure the food you eat, especially in restaurants, is very hot.

This is because food can be contaminated at any time, including from kitchen workers. Cooking kills bacteria and is safe if served while still hot. On the other hand, anything that sits in the cupboard for hours can grow germs.

This advice comes from NPR as they disprove several myths about travel diarrhea, including the idea that it is caused by harmless bacteria that you just aren’t used to. The culprits are usually bad guy bacteria like E.coli , which can make anyone sick, but locals are immune because they got sick as children. This means you won’t be able to develop a tolerance for them while on vacation – although if you move there, you will probably stop getting sick after a few years.
