If You Want to Learn a New Skill, Let Go of Your Pride First.
When you’re young, it’s easier to learn new skills. Part of the reason is that kids don’t have the same hesitation about looking inexperienced as adults. If you want to learn something new, let go of this pride.
As the business blog Entrepreneur explains, by the time you are an adult, you are expected to have a certain level of experience. This is fine for an area you’ve already explored, but it can make you hesitant to start at the bottom of a new area. After all, nobody wants to look stupid, right? However, if you don’t want to look like a beginner, you will always be:
When Jared Easley, host of the Starve the Doubts podcast, asked me if I planned to attend the Podcast Movement conference this year, I couldn’t say no fast enough … I wasn’t afraid I wouldn’t be perfect. I knew I would not be perfect. I was afraid of what it meant to be imperfect.
This does not mean that you have to take all the calls that you know you cannot complete. However, getting used to being an expert in one area can keep you away from others, unless you want to look a little inexperienced. Everyone starts at the bottom of every area they study, and this is nothing new. The bigger obstacle is not to try.
