Samsung and Nexus Devices Will Now Receive Monthly Security Updates

A rather nasty Android security vulnerability was discovered last week that leaves many wondering if their devices will ever be patched. Now Google and Samsung have announced a new program that will release security updates every month.

Anyone who has ever waited for an Android update will see this as a major shift from previous update policies. Both Samsung and Google have promised that they will update their Galaxy and Nexus lines respectively at least once a month. Of course, there are still a lot of devices, and it’s unclear how many older phones or tablets will go unnoticed.

From Google’s side, current security updates will be rolled out to the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10, and Nexus Player. In addition, Google promises security updates within three years of the device’s initial availability or 18 months after a particular device was last sold on the Google store. Samsung has not specified which devices will be supported or for how long.
