Big surprise, most cats don’t like to trim their claws. And if you’ve ever tried trimming a cat’s claws, you know how frustrating it can be. To make the process easier, teach your cat to associate the process with something positive.
Of course, a treat is a positive reinforcement, and this is exactly what is used here, along with caress and comfort. In the video above, Petco shows you how to teach your cat to associate clipping with pleasure over the course of a week.
In fact, everything is simple. Prepare the cat for grooming: hold it in place, then gently squeeze its paw to expose the nail. But instead of breaking the wire cutters, give them a snack. The idea is that after a few times they will get used to this process and realize that they will learn something from it. Ideally, when it’s time to trim your cat’s claws, it will be much more relaxed.
The ASPCA vouches for this advice and offers some additional guidance. I accidentally tried this with my cat. Although I haven’t treated her for a week, I always give her a treat while I trim my nails to distract her more than anything else, but it seems to help, too. Of course, after one paw, the fixture goes up and I have to give it a little break before returning to the other paw, rewarding it with treats again.
