Properly Care for Your Contact Lenses With This Checklist

Contact lenses are great, but a recent CDC report found that 99% of contact lens wearers reported at least one poor hygiene habit. With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at exactly how you should take care of them.

The most common risky behaviors reported by the CDC were keeping contact lens containers longer than recommended and wearing contact lenses while sleeping. If you don’t like contracting eye infections, you should not engage in any of these activities, as well as many other common habits. Here’s a basic checklist for taking proper care of your contacts:

  • Remove contact lenses before going to bed, showering, swimming, or in the hot tub.
  • Replace contacts as directed and only wear them for as long as recommended.
  • Do not add solution to the lens case, replace it every time (clean and rinse the case every day).
  • Replace the housing every three months.
  • Wipe and rinse the contacts with the solution each time you remove them.

If you don’t do any of the above, you run the risk of getting infected. You can read some funny horror horrors about eye infections in The Wall Street Journal if you’d rather be afraid to take care of yourself.
