Build Trust by Volunteering Information You Don’t Need to Share

Honesty is more than just never lying. If you want to gain the trust of others, be prepared to share information that you don’t need to.

As the business blog Entrepreneur points out, if you speak openly about aspects of your life or business, the people (or the public) around you are more likely to trust you. This is due to our natural tendency to fear what we don’t know. If you’re willing to share what you don’t need, the people you share with will take it easy.

For example, two months ago, Reuters reported a lawsuit filed against an USDA unit for not responding and providing requested information to a group of food safety advocates seeking detailed information on genetically modified crops.

It doesn’t matter if it is a deliberate deception at a micro scale or a calculated obstacle at a macro level. In both cases, the sacrifice is trust.

Of course, everyone has things they don’t want to discuss. And not all secrets are vile. However, if you are willing to talk openly about the little things, others will be more comfortable trusting you with the rest.
