Facebook’s Latest IPhone Update Fixes Two Major Battery Drains
iOS: If you use Facebook on your iPhone, you’re probably used to the terrible drain on your battery . While we wouldn’t expect this to change overnight, Facebook is fixing two major issues that you’ve fixed.
As Facebook engineer Ari Grant explained, there were two main problems that caused a lot of unnecessary battery drain. The first was a constant CPU spin cycle that wasted your resources with little to no action.
Second, and seemingly worse, it was a bug that kept the audio channel open if you closed the app while watching a video. This resulted in silent sound reproduction that only required precious battery power. Both of these problems should be fixed in the new version.
Of course, as always, using Facebook’s mobile site will be a much better way to conserve battery life in the long run. Hopefully these new bug fixes help, but no one knows how many other battery drain related bugs there are in the app. It was usually assumed that Facebook was draining the battery because it was doing too many things on purpose, but now it seems that some of this leak is simply due to the accidental waste of resources.
