What Should You Say Instead of “I Can’t Afford It”

When money is tight, it’s easy to look at whatever you want and simply state, “I can’t afford it.” However, by turning that statement into a question, you can change the way you think about your personal finances for the better.

By saying, “I can’t afford it,” you can get caught in a loop where you can never afford whatever you want. This is why Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad , invites you to turn the phrase “I can’t afford it” into “How can I afford it?” Kiyosaki explains:

One off the hook, and the other makes you think. When you automatically say the words “I can’t afford this,” your brain stops working. Asking the question, “How can I afford it?” your brain is working.

Kiyosaki also notes that saying “I can’t afford it” evokes negative feelings such as sadness and helplessness. However, when you turn it into a question, it creates opportunity and creates positive emotions such as arousal. Whatever you want is now a call to action, not an unattainable goal. Basically, this is the basis for a complete shift in thought. Stop thinking about your current financial situation as permanent and start thinking about how you can change your current methods and afford what you need. You have to start somewhere, right?
