Former Microsoft Engineer Tip to Programmers: Learn to Write
Success in any field is rarely limited to one single skill, even one such as programming. This is why Mike Borozdin, now the senior technical director of DocuSign , invites all programmers to hone their grammar skills in addition to their programming skills.
You may be a fantastic programmer, but writing clearly can help you better explain your work to managers or potential clients. Borozdin, a Microsoft engineer for several years, explains to Business Insider :
I would advise programmers to do one thing – write. Learn to write … It’s really helpful. You need to know how to express yourself. And it is really difficult for many engineers to speak and speak in public … Once you create a successful program, you will probably write in English as much as you are going to write Java or Objective B. I created several programs in DocuSign that went viral. and people liked them and wanted to use them more. And I probably wrote the documentation and explanations 10 times and answered the questions in the form of paragraphs.
Plus, knowing how to write makes it easier to get the credit for your work. Borozdin recalls how he handed over the work to a manager and did not receive recognition for his work, because it was not clear that it was his idea. If you can only write in code, it might be a good idea to spend some more time with one of your first written languages .
