This Graphical Salad Dressing Guide Ensures You Never Buy a Bottle Again

Buying salad dressing in the store is unusually expensive, especially considering what you can do better at home . You don’t have to settle for oil and vinegar. This simple drawing from KptnCook shows you how to make any salad dressing, from the ingredients you have or the ones you’d like to use.

Whether you love creamy salad dressings or savory vinaigrettes, the graphics will get you covered. If you’re going to make something creamy like a homemade ranch or just a yogurt dressing, all you need is three parts of your main creamy ingredient (like yogurt, mayonnaise, or sour cream), one part of a flavoring (like fresh herbs, soy sauce, garlic, or something else) and one part of a smoothing liquid (such as lemon or lime juice). Mix it all together and you have a homemade ranch that’s better than Hidden Valley.

If you prefer vinaigrette, your proportions are the same, but the ingredients are different. Instead of cream, you need fat – three parts butter (like olive or sesame), one part flavoring (herbs, fried shallots , garlic, mustard, etc.), and one part acid (vinegar, lemon juice). Whisk it all up and get emulsified and you’ve got a great salad dressing that’s as good as anything else you’ll spend money on in a restaurant.

Try it yourself at home. My main dressing is usually seasoned with rice vinegar, olive oil, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper and maybe a few herbs if I have them, but that’s all I have at home. Once you learn how to cook it yourself, taste it and adjust the flavor, you will never buy a salad dressing again.
