Resist the Fear of Missing Out by Determining What You Get by Staying

The fear of missing out can lead to intense anxiety if you don’t know how to say no. To help, think for a moment what you will gain by staying at home.

As the personal finance blog Money Ning points out, not everything good or interesting in life happens outside of your home. You can enjoy the company of friends in your own home, or simply appreciate the time with your family. The fact that you are “missing” one thing does not mean that you are not satisfied with something else:

The reality is that I might be missing out on something more important if I let FOMO change the way I use my time. What am I missing because of what my son is doing? This is something that deserves a lot more attention than something I might have missed in terms of “fun” and internal jokes.

Whichever you choose, you only have a certain number of hours per day. By doing one thing that you are afraid to miss, you are sure to take time away from something else. This compromise will always exist. This way, you don’t have to worry so much about missing something as about which activities are of higher priority in your life.
