Use Locking Bolts to Extend the Life of Your Outdoor Deck
Wood decks and stairs are susceptible to decay and water damage. Raise the deck uprights and ladder risers above the supports to prevent water seeping into the wood.
Use an impact driver to drive the 2 1/2 “brake washer bolts into the base of the wood project and leave approximately 3/4” of clearance between the bolt head and the wood. This space will prevent the wood from absorbing water and will also provide an easy way to fine-tune the level of the uprights by screwing in or out the locking bolts.
Another way to protect the wood from moisture is to wrap the ends in a Blueskin membrane . This self-adhesive waterproof membrane provides another layer of protection to your wood for a longer life.
Before considering these tips, make sure they comply with your local building codes.
