Hide Glaze Mistakes (and Add Tasty Toppings) With Cereal
A beautiful cake that tastes great is tricky to make, but if all goes wrong, grab the nearest box of cereal. A light layer on top adds a delicious crunchy touch to the cake and also conveniently hides your frosting mistakes.
Decorating with cereals also makes it possible to hide imperfect glaze. Even if you don’t have time to cover the whole cake with cereal, you can still create a beautiful pattern where you made mistakes.
Obviously this won’t work with all types of cakes. You will need a frosting that is thick enough for the flakes to stick. Bright flakes like Fruity Pebbles will add tons of visual interest to your cake, but won’t taste good with chocolate-coated chocolate cake. Save it for vanilla cake or cake with fruit frosting or filling. Cocoa puffs would be a good alternative, but obviously you don’t want them on your inverted pineapple pie. Choose cereals that match the flavor of the cake you’re baking, or use softer flavored cereals like rice crisps to add visual texture to your cake without a ton of distracting flavor.
