If You Find It Difficult to Write a Biography, Talk to a Friend.
Even if you’re a decent writer, writing your own bio or mission statement can be a challenge. If you find it difficult to deal with, try talking to a friend about it.
Recently, a good friend of mine struggled to write a short bio for her website. “I’m good at getting my point across when I speak,” she said. “But I cannot convey this message when I write.” It’s hard to write about yourself. To deal with this, we tried the exercise. I just asked her to tell me, as a friend, what her mission was, and I dictated. When we finished, we had a page full of information, and we could highlight its best lines. From there, the biography is pretty much self-written.
Most people find it difficult to talk about themselves, but it’s easier with someone you trust. As you sit with a blank page in front of you, you may be thinking of all the strangers who will read your words. Maybe you’re worried about making a good first impression on them. It is natural and difficult to be sincere when there is such pressure.
Talk to someone you know to get your point across to your own unique voice.
