Negotiate Higher Salaries With This Simple Formula
Asking for a raise is not easy for most of us, but a few tips and tricks can help along the way. When it’s time to ask your boss for a raise, remember to tell him or her what makes you different, and you can do it with this simple formula.
Whether you’re starting a new job or just asking for a raise, when you’re negotiating a paycheck, you want to convince yourself of it. And expert Jim Hopkinson offers a formula to take your query a notch higher:
Fortunately, there is a simple structure and phrase to remember that can give you an added advantage. Not only will you stand out from the competition when looking for a job, but you will also be able to negotiate a higher salary when you receive an offer or ask for a raise …
The basis is this: not only this … but this …
If you were to write it as a formula, it might look like this:
“Not only do I have [all the standard requirements that everyone has] +, but I also have [the following unique traits that make me a better candidate and cost more money].”
Basically, you want to understand what makes you different from others. What additional skills, work habits, or experience do you bring to the list that will make your employer know you are worthy of a higher grade? If you can’t come up with a particular skill, Hopkinson recommends something like:
“Not only do I have the skills I need for the job, but since I don’t need any training, I can get down to business right away, have an immediate impact and start tomorrow.”
