Be the Best Non-Drinker Party Host With This Simple Rule of Thumb
Cocktails are essential for most parties, but those who cannot or cannot drink them are often left to sip on a boring can of soda. Here’s a simple rule to follow so that those who don’t drink can feel like they are treating themselves too.
Drinks are meant to keep your hands busy while you socialize, and people who drink in moderation will gradually move on to cocktails, wine, and beer. They take sensible sips when they eat because alcohol enhances the taste. On the other hand, sodas, juice, and water can be drunk much faster, so non-drinkers may end up consuming twice as much fluids and jumping out of the bathroom and back all night. Plus, non-drinkers won’t feel special about drinking what they might have drunk at any other time. To wow your non-drinking guests, Jamie Lauren Keiles of lifestyle blog NYMag The Cut shares a helpful rule of thumb:
… the hallmark of a good soft drink is that (a) can be consumed at the same rate as any other drink full of alcohol, and (b) can possibly be considered a “special treat” (it’s still a joy season).
Give them something they can sip slowly and to taste. Keles offers hot drinks like mulled wine, specialty teas, or hot chocolate that is not sold out of the box. For something cold, choose something sour, sparkling, and homemade (think seltzer water with cucumber and melon added). Don’t just throw out 12 packs of Diet Coke and call it good. Make it a party for them too. You can find more tips at the link below.
