Garden Containers That Cannot (and Cannot) Withstand the Cold
Winter doesn’t mean you can’t have plants in your yard, but if you have potted plants on your patio or patio, you need to be careful what materials these containers are made of. The last thing you want is for your all-weather plant to die from a pot cracking or rusting in frost or snow.
Most metal, plastic, wood, and fiberglass pots can handle freezing temperatures, so they are usually safe. If you have metal pots or planters, watch them for rust or make sure they are galvanized to protect them from wear and rust. Terracotta, ceramics, concrete and other moisture-absorbing materials are prone to cracking when the temperature drops.
This happens when the water soaked in the pot turns into ice at temperatures below freezing. However, ceramics fired at high temperatures usually do not suffer from this, so if you have expertly crafted (or DIY!) Pots, you should be fine.
