Build a Super Cheap Gaming PC With Old Server Parts

You can put together a pretty decent computer on a small budget . But if you really want to cut costs, Linus Tech Tips put together a used server motherboard, two tandem quad-core processors, and 16GB of RAM for less than $ 150.

Sure, a full install will cost a little more (you’ll still need a chassis, GPU, and PSU), but $ 150 for eight cores and 16GB of RAM is one of the stellar prices we’ve ever seen. … And according to Linus’ tests, it works damn well as a cheap gaming rig.

However, building with old server components is not an easy task. Finding compatible parts is a bit of a hassle and you might have to do a bit of DIY modding to get things working properly. Linus, for example, had to saw off part of his graphics card to make it fit and use a piece of wood as the back of the CPU cooler. However, the final product is impressive for its price tag.

Should I do it? Well … it depends on how much your time is worth. But as with everything about DIY, half of the glory comes from the success of an assembly that works despite all the difficulties, and it certainly falls into that category. Watch the video for all the details.
